A première performance of Colin Brumby’s Overture in Folk Style, composed especially for the newly formed Orchestra, opened the program. Local pianist, Lisa Kawai, featured as soloist in the Grieg Piano Concerto. After interval, Schubert’s Symphony No.8 (“Unfinished”), which included Professor Brian Newbould’s completion of Schubert’s sketch for the final movement, rounded out the concert.

Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture opened the winter concerts, followed by the Alfred Hill Concerto for Horn and Orchestra featuring Robert Johnson, Principal Horn with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. In the second half of the program the ever-popular Beethoven’s 5th provided the orchestra with plenty of scope to showcase its resources in this classic symphony.

Mozart’s Overture to The Magic Flute was the opening item for the Orchestra’s performances, his much-loved Clarinet Concerto was then performed by Andrew Doyle on the basset clarinet, the authentic instrument for which Mozart composed the work. The program finished with the large-scale Romantic work of Johannes Brahms, his Symphony No.2.

Location Memorial Hall, Bowral

The percussion and brass sections of the Orchestra were showcased in the opening of the concerts with a performance of Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man. Soprano, Judith Rough then featured as soloist in the Four Last Songs of Richard Strauss. The emotional intensity continued in the second half with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5.
